March 14: “Rainbows Over Kapa’a” by Author Bill Fernandez
On Sunday, March 14, 2010, Kamehameha Schools alumnus, Bill Fernandez, will give an author talk between 3 and 5 P.M. at Native Books Hawaii. His memoir/family history, Rainbows Over Kapa’a, tells the story of five generations of his family who settled in the east side of Kaua’i and eventually built The Roxy Theater, the largest movie palace in the islands in 1939. The book is filled with photographs.
“You will delight in the array of characters,” says Linda Moriarty, author of Niihau Shell Lei. “A must read for anyone living on Kaua’i”, Andy Bushnell, Prof. Emeritus, KCC. “A gift to the island,” according to a neighbor. “I read it with tears streaming as I relived my youth,” said a woman who grew up in Kapa’a. “Those were the good old days”, a long time merchant recalled. “I couldn’t sleep after Bill’s talk because I started to remember so many adventures as a boy in the islands.” It is reactions like these which bring a lot of joy to Bill when he talks about his book.
